
A longtime museum executive and Texas native, Joel A. Bartsch has more than 30 years of practical and senior management experience in the museum sector. Over the course of his career, he has developed a firm understanding of such things as partnering with scientific researchers and academic advisors, creating diverse revenue streams, and managing various expansion and renovation projects. Joel Bartsch leverages this knowledge to lead the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) as president and CEO.
Prior to accepting his current role, Mr. Bartsch spent 13 years as project manager and curator and director of earth sciences at HMNS. During this time, he developed and funded several projects for the division and coordinated the work of over 200 individuals. He also negotiated international and domestic exhibition contracts, many of which were made possible via his network of international professionals in such areas as South America, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Joel A. Bartsch continues to maintain this network by traveling around the world regularly for both business and pleasure.
Mr. Bartsch also worked for the California State Mining & Mineral Museum, Texas Memorial Museum, and Lyman House Memorial Museum in Hawaii before accepting leadership positions at HMNS. He received a BA in seminary studies from Concordia University and a master’s degree in history and the history of science from Rice University. Further, he is a doctoral candidate at Rice.
